National Walking Month

National Walking Month

May is National Walking Month and here at Frankie & Dottie’s, we know that whatever the weather, it’s always a great day to get outside for a walk.

This year, we’re encouraging you to #try20 and walk for an extra 20 minutes each day during May.

Walking is an easy way to improve both physical and mental health: here are some of the benefits from just 20 minutes of walking a day:

Good for your heart - Walking not only strengthens your heart but reduces the risk of heart disease and strokes.

Help you to lose weight - If you are new to exercise or maybe trying to lose weight, then walking is a great form of low impact exercise that is free and can be done anywhere.

Walking gives you energy - It boosts your circulation and increases the oxygen supply around your body, which in turn will keep you feeling alert and awake and help concentration throughout the day.

Increase your vitamin D intake - Here in the UK there are lots of people who are deficient in Vitamin D: the best way to increase your levels of Vitamin D is to get outside in the sunshine.

Walking makes you happy - In the same way that walking can help you feel energised, it is also great for making you feel happy. A brisk walk can be extremely  beneficial if you are suffering from depression, anxiety or feeling stressed.

Of course, if like us you have a dog, you’re probably already getting out every day to make sure your dogs get their daily dose of exercise. Why not split the day up and take them for multiple, shorter walks throughout the day if you can? This will help you concentrate and be more productive with your day. Here are some other ways to help you get out and about a little more during May:

Walk to work, walk your kids to school, walk to the shops - these little swaps are not only great for your own personal health, but also reduce air pollution and are good for the environment.

Walk during your lunch break and throughout your working day - take a break from your screen and walk a few laps of your garden if you need to!

Invite your friends or family for a walk - it's great to discover new places! Go for an evening stroll, either alone or with family/friends

Take a mindful wander - take time for yourself to absorb the sights, smells and sounds you encounter!
